The program seeks to overcome obstacles to fusion energy commercialization.
The U.S. Department of Energy announced a new partnership with energy agencies of the United Kingdom to expedite the development of commercially available nuclear energy. The first step the agencies will take to achieve this goal is establishing a joint committee co-chaired by leaders from both countries. The committee is expected to form and meet for the first time in early 2024.
“Fusion energy could provide a low-carbon, safe, sustainable, and reliable energy supply with the potential to transform global efforts to achieve net-zero carbon emissions and to enhance energy security and resilience,” the Energy Department stated. “This new partnership aims to recognize and develop the complementarity between U.S. and UK resources and facilities in fusion, including those in academia, industry and government.”
This statement was signed and released by Deputy Secretary of Energy David Turk and the UK’s Nuclear and Networks Minister Andrew Bowie after their meeting in Washington, D.C., last week.
